INTRODUCTION
The Film Critic is a format for structured group discussion about films in English. In the days leading up to class, students watch a film selected by the instructor, and complete role worksheets in preparation for a discussion. In the classroom, students adopt one of a variety of roles: Chief Critic, Storyboarder, Casting Director, Scriptwriter, Location Director, Researcher, and contribute to a classroom discussion about the film according to their roles.
FOR THE INSTRUCTOR
One week before each class, select a film for students to watch and ask students to select their roles for the class discussion. Ask students to watch the film and complete their role worksheets about the film for homework.
In the classroom, facilitate the discussion rather than act as instructor. After dealing with classroom preliminaries, ask the students with the role of Chief Critic to lead group discussions for the duration of the class, intervening sparingly to keep the discussion flowing. At the end of the class conduct a review, and for the following week's class introduce the film and let students decide their roles.
This book is suitable for intermediate to advanced students with CEFR above B2, TOEIC scores above 600 points, TOEFL iBT above 65 points, and IELTS above 5.5 points.
This is a 'grab and go' textbook, in the sense that no preparation is required by the instructor immediately before each class. The book is designed for a course of up to 15 classes.
FOR THE STUDENT
Before the class, watch the film selected by your instructor and complete the role worksheet for your allocated role for homework. During the class, the student with the role of Chief Critic will act as a group leader and lead the discussion. With the help of your completed role worksheet, contribute your knowledge and opinions about the film to the discussion according to your allocated role.
